Xiangshawan Desert Lotus Hotel

Lotus Hotel is located in XiangShaWan desert, 800 kilometers west of Beijing in the middle of Ordos and Baotou. The site is subject Hantaï River, a branch of the Yellow River, and is Kubuqi desert more than 200 kilometers wide.

Due to the restriction of its particular geographical condition, PLaT architects invented a new structural system fixed in fluids sands using only steel panels without using concrete or water. Panels and skeletal structures of support are pre-made and are based on the construction of a large container for sand. Thus, the structure of steel panel can function as a floating desert bringing the boat building. The sands in and out of the structure carry the same forces to another, and it is flexible stabilized. Furthermore, the walls are carriers to reduce the pressure on the base structures.
In addition, designers use local materials in interior design so that people fully experience the desert in Lotus Hotel. For example, through a series of experiments, they were able to invent a wall covering material that is made of local desert sands.
The shape of Lotus Hotel not only blends into the desert, but also has a power of the environment and itself. Architects have used the traditional Chinese idea of "Zhen", that is, in simple terms, the art of repetition of the same elements. Rotation angle even in a square triangles created in the process, and is the strongest form. In consideration of the structure, shade and wind, the architects integrated function, form and landscape, resulting in a form of lotus.
Lotus Hotel is only a part of the planning XiangShaWan Desert. There will no longer be sustainable tourism in the desert, and further develop the architecture of the desert. PLaT Architects aims for zero net sustainable architecture that generates electricity and water in its own system enough for food.
