Bionic Eyes activate! Microchip gives sight to the blind
A new chip "bionic eye" has been implanted in the eyes of two blind British men, giving them a vision for the first time in decades.
It looks like the vision of the visor Geordi LaForge is already updated. A tiny chip 3mm gave vision to the blind. The scientists and doctors at Oxford introduced a new "bionic eye" microchip in the eyes of two blind people last month in a grueling eight-hour operation. The chips were placed in the back of the eyes and connected with electrodes. A few weeks later, the two men - Chris James and Robin Millar - regained useful vision "and are well on the way to the recognition of faces and see once more, reports Sky News."Since starting the device I am able to detect light and distinguish the outlines of certain objects which is an encouraging sign," said James. "I even dreamed in very bright colors for the first time in 25 if part of my brain was asleep woke up! I think it is very promising for future research and I'm happy to contribute to that legacy. "
Both patients previously blind were able to detect light immediately after the chip / sensor (which is not entirely unlike the cameras in your smartphone) was started, and to detect objects white in a dark background. Their eyes have improved since. Although they will never find the color vision chip (designed by a company called Retina Implant) is equipped with 1500 pixels which capture light and transmit it to the brain. It gives patients a "field of vision is limited to a window the size of a CD case held at arm's length."
"I always had this thought that one day I would be able to see again," said James. "It is not a cure, but it can put the world in a certain perspective. It will give me some pictures rather than just a black world. "Despite its current limitations, the procedure is a step forward. Unfortunately, it will not help everyone who has lost his sight, at least not yet. It is currently designed specifically for people with retinitis pigmentosa, which is a condition that affects one in 3,000 to 4,000 people. However, in the future, it could restore the site to blind people with macular degeneration as well.James said he decided to participate to show the promise of this technology to help improve the lives of children and future adults who are blind. A video interview with Chris James is Sky News.
