Aogashima is a small volcanic island in the tropical seas of the Philippines under the administration of Tokyo although it is located about 358 kilometers from the capital. It is the island's southernmost and most isolated inhabited the islands of Izu. The island itself is a giant volcanic crater, and in the crater there is another, smaller volcano. Aogashima is still considered an active volcano C-Class it last erupted in 1780. When the last eruption killed nearly half the population of the island and forced residents to flee remaining. It took just fifty years to keep people coming back. Today, some 200 villagers brave live on the island.

It is believed that the island was formed by the overlapping remnants of at least four submarine calderas. Aogashima includes inner and outer edges of the craters. The south coast rises to a sharp edge forming an edge of a crater named Ikenosawa with a diameter of 1.5 km. The caldera is occupied by a secondary cone named Maruyama, still emit geothermal steam in an area where no plants are obvious. Otonbu, the peak of the outer rim of the crater at a height of 432 meters above sea level, is the highest point of the island. It offers panoramic views across the volcano in the Pacific Ocean.
Located in the Kuroshio region open and known for the production of tidal waters, the island is only accessible by boat. The island has no real Habour for anchoring boats because of the steep cliffs of layered volcanic deposits around the entire island. The other option is to take a helicopter provided by Tokyo Island shuttle service. Two of them leave Hachijojima, the nearest island about 60 km. Before the helicopter service was launched in 1993, the passenger transport essential goods and food products used to be made only by boat, where people hardly knew when to expect the arrival. The helicopter runs once a day and carry only a maximum of 9 passengers. Many times it is canceled due to heavy fog, according to the season. Therefore Aogashima is still a rarely visited island.
There is not much to do on Aogashima if, except enjoy the serenity of a tropical paradise. In the center of the island is a geothermal sauna. It is a public institution using geothermal and gas people use for cooking. This cooker geothermal steam is available. Fresh vegetables steamed, potatoes and eggs are a specialty of Aogashima. The hotel also has a sauna, hot showers and a public bath.

When they reach the age of fifteen, they would to go to school on the mainland, and nobody knows if and when they will return to Aogashima. Folk songs that people here are mostly sing stories to leave the island and separation from their loved ones.
